Hi,
I would like to purchase a light box for my husband who suffers from SAD so would appreciate some advice.
What time of day should they be used and how long should they be used for to be affective. He would have most time in the evenings after work - i this an effective time.
There seem to be a lot of boxes available so could somebody please recommend one. I have a budget of about £150 but am willing to pay more for the right product.

Hi Jodieh

Most studies have indicated that light therapy first thing is most effective, but people tend to try a few variations to see what works best for them and which also fits in with their schedule.

Treatment time is another variable, which can only be discovered personally by trial and error, and which also varies with the type of lightbox.

It is hard to recommend a lightbox, because most SAD suferers seem to fall in love with the first lightbox they buy if they perceive it as being helpful. Therefore everyone generally only recommends the lightbox or lightboxes which they own, and they may never have tried other lightboxes for comparison.

Be realistic about how big a lightbox your home can accommodate, or how portable it will need to be to ensure treatment adherence.

The efficacy of light therapy has only been shown to be statistically significant using large lightboxes (120 x 60 cm) based on fluorescent tubes. There is a current market trend towards producing much smaller units, which, although they have anecdotal support from users, have never been used in large scientific studies like the old, large lightboxes.

If possible, I would recommend getting the largest, most powerful lighgtbox on a trial period at first, to judge how effective light therapy will be for your husband. At least then you have something to compare against for optimum effect, if you later decide to try a smaller unit for its more convenient size and cost.

Most lightbox retailers offer a trial period, including our host Lumie; and most SAD sufferers can apparently decide within 3 weeks if light therapy is working.

I have a Lumie tasklight and the light visor and of the two I prefer the visor and find the visor more effective. It's possibly because it's easier to get the visor in the right position to get the correct amount of exposure.

As Joel says, most of us have very little to compare to other than whatever we own.

I also find the visor easier to use as I can be mobile at the same time which makes the idea of using it first thing in the morning much easier. At the moment I'm exercising first thing so I use the visor whilst I'm on the cross trainer.

I find light most effective first thing in the morning, the timing of it seems to make quite a big difference to me.

Somewhere there is a link to the Apollo circadian rhythm test which helps to identify at what time light is best for the individual.

Lastly I'd recommend a dawn simulator which makes the idea of getting up or waking up (you can use a visor in bed!) early enough to get light more attractive!

I have the standard visor for use at home and a brightspark for use at work in addition to the Bodyclock advanced. A fortune --- yes but winter without them---I would stay in bed 24/7!

I'm still in two minds whether to buy a light box. I wake very early, almost every day - so a dawn simulator isn't really going to do anything other than be a nice way of turning on a light. And, unless the weather is completely foul, I try to go out.

Even a winter night's sky can be therapeutic - if only to remind me that I'm only the tiniest part of the universe!

hi Aaron that is such a good point, we are just a tiny part of the universe, yet when you are low it is all consuming and you cant see beyond your own problems if you know what i mean- extreme self absorbance or something like that! I bought a light box from ebay a couple of weeks ago, and a dawn simulator as i was desperate to try anything that might make me feel better. The dawn simulator is a nice way to wake up that is true. I am not sure if the light box is working for me or not but i will carry on using it while there is not much sun in the sky.

I've a Brightspark; had it for a year or so. It does help me, particularly for daytime fatigue. I'm pinned to a computer monitor most of the day, so having it just under the screen is convenient. I've been surprised how quickly I tune out the dazzle. I'd expect a load of headaches, but they don't seem to happen.

I have two. I have a Lumie BRightspark which is fine. I also have a portable lamp which gets an awful lot of use, a Golite M2. I lie in bed with it on, sit at the computer, in the arm chair, put it on the kitchen counter while I'm working, have used it in the car, at work, all over the place.

I have the 10 000 lux Lumie desk lamp, it hasn‘t helped at all. Only it doesn‘t give me headaches anymore. But going to the sun bed really helps me. Gonna try the pharos max next.

I think the most beneficial time is as soon as you get up and I have also read that they really have not proven if light boxes work better during the day than evenings and that you can really do them at anytime, but I still think the most beneficial time is when you first wake up and then if you need to, you can always turn it on as often as you need to throughout the day or night.

My psychiatrist told me not to worry about getting anything fancy and that all I needed to worry about is that it has 10,000 LUX. I have a SunTouch Plus by NatureBright which if I remember correctly cost me around $120. This was the cheapest one I could find but then you also have to replace the bulbs in it every couple of years and probably even sooner than that if you use it more than the stated requirements for that model.
