My personal findings:-

I recently changed my diet. I found that I ate sugar to wake myself up when feeling my usual SAD drowsy self during the day.

Havent eaten sugar for a few weeks now and my sleeping habits have returned to normal ones!

However, the last two days I have been in a position where I put myself in a position where it was hard to say no (whoops!). Yesterday I couldnt resist Paklava, today just one jaffa cake!

Guess what, my insomnia has come back for two nights running. Its 1.30am now, and Im wide awake. My mind seems so active.

Also, my husband cut out sugar too, and he had sugar just yesterday. He was awake till 3am with me. Tonight he is fast asleep - he had no sugar today!

So my early conclusions are that sugar keeps me awake (as does caffeine)- it seems to make sense.

SAD makes me sleepy and obviously crave carbs to combat sleepiness. However, I reckon those same sugars are keeping me from getting to sleep promptly and staying asleep at night (like caffeine). I am not cutting out carbs - Just added sugars as in beverages hot/cold, cakes, biscuits, most breakfast cereals etc and other foods with a high proportion of sugar. No other definite rules.

Caffeine is also a product that can help people 'feel like' they function better during the day, however, it too can cause insomnia. Coming off caffeine can initially cause side effects though.

Anyone else come to the same conclusions as me?

Me x

Hi Me, it is incredible the powerful effect that such a small amount of sugar can have!! I have never done such an expperiment and do crave sugar/ biscuits/ cakes in the winter, but i cannot imagine life without it!! I admire you for your self control!

It really isnt that bad, when I get the craving I have some fruit (never what I want, but it does reduce the craving considerably). Oh and I have found some black chocolate with high cocoa content and no added sugar (dont seem to need more than 4 blocks max) - for emergencies.

After a few days, the need for sugar seems to go and thats when I feel better.

Me,

Yes, I have come to the same conclusion. Sugar keeps me awake all night, even in small doses.

Thanks for bringing this thread up again knoop.

Ive been feeling a little worn out recently and have been attacking the sugar again. It always amazes me how our bodies get into a viscious circle so easily.

Having read this thread again, its no wonder I'm not feeling at my best.

Thanks for reminding me flower. Im going cold turkey again! What did I do with that emergency chocolate??
